Fall 2002 in Upper New England

This is a picture from the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

Hanna visited me in mid-October over her Fall Break from school. During October 19-22, we took a driving tour of Upper New England. On Saturday the 19th we drove from Harrisburg, through Albany, NY, and across souther Vermont and New Hampshire, through rainy and cold weather, eventually stopping in Manchester, NH, for the evening (me with a nasty migraine). On the 20th, we drove across New Hampshire to Portsmouth, then up the coast through Cape Neddick, ME, and Portland, ME, where we stopped for lunch. We continued our trip up through Camden, ME, stopping at Camden Hills State Park along the way. We spent the night in Augusta, ME -- the state capitol. On Monday the 21st we drove across Maine, northern New Hampshire, through the White Mountains, and across northern Vermont, through Montpelier, the state capitol. We visited the Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Factory near Waterbury, VT. From there we drove south through Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, part of New York, and stopping in Scranton, PA, for the night. On Tuesday the 22nd we drove back to Harrisburg, PA, in the morning and Hanna (attempted) to fly home to Montana in the afternoon (her flight got delayed in Detroit, resulting in her being stuck in Minneapolis for the night, returning to Montana the following day).

A view toward the south from the beach at Cape Neddick, ME.

Hanna's trying to avoid getting splashed by the waves on the beach at Cape Neddick, ME.

Owl's Head Lighthouse, at Owl's Head, ME, near Rockland, ME.

We saw this tree and the town in background near a lake and were struck by the colors. Unfortunately, the majority of my pictures were marred by ugly power lines. This is the only picture I found to my liking.

I know, not very exciting. The mural on the side of the warehouse was intriguing. Shot from the top of a parking garage in Portland, ME, where we stopped for lunch. Had fresh fish-n-chips and fresh clam chowder. Yummy! I've officially had "fresh seafood" on both coasts in 2002 -- Portland, ME, and Seattle, WA. Lots of highway miles!!

When in Vermont, stopping at the Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream factory is an absolute must! Check out their web site for information on tour schedule. We got ice cream samples that were delicious! My new favorite seasonal ice cream is "The Full Vermonty" -- which I can't find anywhere! Doh!

This landscape view was nice. I believe it was taken along the road in Vermont, though it could have been in New Hampshire.

Definitely in New Hampshire, we stopped at a visitor's center just out of Maine and saw this view of the White Mountains. The road we were on eventually went into the mountains on the right side. There were snow squalls passing from right-to-left, too, though you can't see them very well in this picture. The beauty of Fall!

A look back down the road through the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The highway cuts right through the White Mountains National Forest.

Another look back down the road from whence we had come.

A look ahead to where we're headed.

The stone tower in the foreground and Camden, ME, in the background, a view from atop Mount Battie.

Another view of Camden, ME, from the ground this time, atop Mount Battie.

A zoomed-in view of Camden, ME, from atop Mount Battie, also from the ground.

Similar to the first picture in this series, taken from White Mountains National Forest in northern New Hampshire.
