DAY #4 (7/4/2000): Washington, D.C.
(Click on any picture to see the full-size image.)Here is a shot of the National Archives the morning of the 4th. Every year, the Declaration of Independence is read from this location. On the right is the Capitol, in preparation for the evening performance A Capitol Fourth with the National Symphony Orchestra, with special guests.
No trip would be complete with visiting the key national Monuments. Here is a long-distance shot of the Jefferson, a near-by shot of the Lincoln, followed by Lincoln himself, and then a nice reflecting picture of the Washington, taken from the steps of the Lincoln.
The next three pictures are from the A Capitol Fourth celebration. From the first picture, note all the people filling the Capitol lawn and the Mall. Easily a quarter million people. The middle shot is of fireworks as they burst from behind the Washington Monument. Notice Ray Charles on the project screen. The last shot is the end of the performance, two tired and dirty people ready to make the 45 minute trek back to their hotel. And yes, it took 45 minutes to walk 12 blocks. You try moving very fast with a quarter million people around!
